The most important meal of the day

If you’re at about 15% body fat or more (you haven’t seen your abs in a long time) then there’s a good chance that you’re not managing carbs well. This is what is called insulin resistance and if you eat those carbs there’s a good chance you’ll keep gaining fat. Reducing carbohydrate consumption in the first stages of fat loss is crucial to become more sensitive to insulin (allowing you to manage carbs better).

Insulin is a hormone that your body produces when you put something that tastes sweet in your mouth. If your body has been abusing carbs regularly; you’ll store those carbs as body fat. Carbs do play an important role in increasing muscle mass assuming you’re lean enough (you can see your abs). Otherwise they could just make you fatter. Therefore, to start gaining some muscle during the initial phase of your fat loss journey you’ll need to eat plenty of protein.

Ok, but what should I eat?

Well, let’s start at the beginning.

In nutrition there’s 3 main things: Proteins, fats, and carbohydrates (sugars, carbs, starches are just synonyms).

The most important meal of the day is breakfast!

Surprise, surprise…

Breakfast is essentially ‘breaking the fast’. Therefore, you need to fuel your body for the day by eating food using your teeth – that means chewing. Drinking a smoothie just won’t cut it. You need to chew food to increase your metabolism because chewing food will cost more energy to digest the food than drinking liquid food. Protein costs the most energy to digest in part because of its density and it also helps to control your blood sugar because it won’t spike your insulin like carbs.

“The first thing you put in your mouth in the morning will determine your neurotransmitters for the day” – Charles R. Poliquin – so what you put in your mouth is paramount. If you want to look good – you should learn to be healthy and live the lifestyle of a healthy person. You may not necessarily be unhealthy – but if you’re reading this there’s a good chance you can do better so read my next post, I got you covered.  😉
